The 2nd Pyrenees Soil Forum, part of the SOLPYR project, moves towards an Action Plan for the sustainable management of this resource

  • 20 Oct

  • Under the slogan ‘Mountain Soils: more than just ground to walk on’, the meeting includes round tables, the assembly of the Pyrenean Soil Alliance (ASPir), technical presentations and a field trip to the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
  • As part of the SOLPYR project, the event will present the results of seven workshops held in the Pyrenean region, in which more than a hundred professionals participated.
  • The workshops gathered contributions from each territory and laid the foundations for a cross-border Action Plan for the management and conservation of Pyrenean soils in the face of climate change.

Jaca, 20 October 2025. Under the slogan ‘Mountain Soils: more than just ground to walk on’, the 2nd Pyrenean Soil Forum will open its doors between 21 and 23 October in Vitoria-Gastéiz to create a space for training, debate and the exchange of experiences on the sustainable management and preservation of Pyrenean soils. The event is part of the Interreg SOLPYR project, which aims to preserve and improve the resilience of mountain soils in the face of climate change, with the support of the ERDF. The aim is to move towards an Action Plan for the sustainable management of this resource and to coordinate administrations, scientists and citizens in decision-making.

The conference will include technical presentations, round tables, the meeting of the Pyrenean Soil Alliance (ASPir) and a field trip on the 22nd, which will allow participants to visit the edaphic itinerary in the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park. The full programme includes specific experiences, such as ‘the use of the mountains in the Parzonería Mayor de Guipuzkoa y Araba’ and a technical seminar on the SOLPYR project, which will explore the vulnerability of soils and the governance of this resource in the Pyrenees, among other issues.

Cross-border Action Plan for soil management

In this regard, the working sessions of the II Pyrenees Soil Forum are expected to analyse the results of the workshops held between September and October in Navarre, Nouvelle Aquitaine, Aragon, Occitanie, Catalonia, the Basque Country and Andorra, which were attended by 111 people, including institutional representatives, technicians, researchers and local agents from the seven Pyrenean territories.

Several key areas stand out from the workshops coordinated by the OPCC-CTP (Pyrenean Climate Change Observatory – Pyrenean Working Community): the need to harmonise information and soil management between Pyrenean regions; the training of professionals, farmers and technicians to ensure a more sustainable use of this essential resource; and the importance of jointly building the foundations for a cross-border Action Plan aimed at managing and preserving Pyrenean soils in the face of climate change.

The SOLPYR project (2024-2027) has a total budget of €1.7 million, of which €1.1 million comes from the ERDF.
