PHUSICOS organises an international spring course focusing on Nature-Based Solutions

  • 10 Feb

The PHUSICOS project is organising between the 2nd and 11th of April 2022 an international spring school focusing on nature-based solutions (NBS) to mitigate natural hazards in the mountain area.

Nature-based solutions are measures inspired by or copied from nature, which are essential for the improvement and quality of ecological resilience. They are also an essential part of European climate adaptation programmes.

PHUSICOS, which means "According to nature" in Greek, is an innovation project funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme where the Pyrenean Observatory of Climate Change (OPCC) has an accompanying and coordinating role for the implementation of nature-based solutions in four places exposed to natural hazards, in the French (Laruns and Barèges) and Spanish (Biescas and Erill la Vall) Pyrenees. It works to demonstrate how nature-based solutions provide robust, sustainable and cost-effective measures to reduce the risk of extreme weather events.

The course, which will be run by the Technical University of Munich, the Pyrenean Climate Change Observatory and the French government's Office of Geological and Mining Research, will take place in the Pyrenees and the Bavarian Alps.

It will consist of field visits, but also of lectures, stakeholder discussions and concrete case study. It will offer the opportunity to improve relations and exchanges between science, politics, business and civil society in order to integrate available knowledge in the field.

Target candidates will be mainly students or young professionals interested in BNS, including scientists, engineers, architects, market practitioners and others.

The applications deadline is 28 February 2022.
